Macrotek Selected for Two Acid Scrubber Contracts

Central Canada
February 13, 2017

Macrotek Inc. has announced receipt of two major contracts for a hazardous waste treatment service provider in Central Canada. Macrotek will design, engineer, and deliver two counter-current packed bed scrubbers for the removal of acids from process gas. Acids being removed include HCl, Cl2, and HCN.

Macrotek’s Packed Bed Scrubbers will be designed with a wide range of flexibility. Required removal efficiencies will be achieved by adjusting and maintaining reagent addition or re-cycle flow.

Macrotek has extensive experience with similar projects and expects its systems will exceed the required removal efficiencies.

The Macrotek Packed Bed Scrubber utilizes a vertical counter-current design for high efficient absorption of gases. In the vertical counter-current design, gas flows upward while scrubbing liquid flows down through banks of sprays.

The scrubbers will include a random packing section where the absorption of gases occurs. The scrubbing liquid is introduced in a liquid spray distribution system which is located above the packing section.

A high efficiency mist eliminator removes entrained liquids. This is an essential step in the overall performance of the scrubber systems.

The project is currently in the design phase with delivery expected in May 2017.

Macrotek Awarded Major Flue Gas Desulphurization Contract for Heavy Oil Recovery Project in Venezuela

Barcelona, Venezuela
November 25, 2014

Macrotek signed a multi-million dollar contract for the design and supply of a compact flue gas desulphurization (FGD) system for the Venezuelan national oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA).

The FGD system will clean up gases from a thermal oxidizer containing a significant concentration of SO2. Hot gases from the oxidizer will be quenched and conditioned in a counter-current quench vessel. A packed column will remove the SO2 and neutralize it to a stable sodium salt.

Water conservation is a key consideration for this project as water availability is limited. A sub-cooling section is incorporated in the design to cool the hot saturated gas and condense the water. The system will be designed with sufficient flexibility to adjust the water balance as desired by the end user and to suit site conditions.

Engineering is currently in progress at Macrotek with project completion expected in the second quarter of 2015.

Macrotek Awarded Half a Million Dollar Contract for Complex Scrubber Systems

Thetford, Quebec
November 29, 2013

Macrotek was awarded phase two of a metal extraction project which includes detailed engineering and fabrication of two complex scrubber systems for a gold extraction plant in Thetford, Quebec.

In one system, the flue gas from a roaster is at high temperature and contains multiple contaminants including particulate, arsenic, and SO2. The high SO2 content allows for sulfuric acid recovery which can be used in the plant or sold. Macrotek’s design includes hot gas filtration (to remove usable product), sub-cooling, re-heating and cold filtration (to remove arsenic), and SO2 neutralization and sulfuric acid generation with hydrogen peroxide.

This SO2 scrubbing process converts the contaminant into a highly valuable, concentrated sulfuric acid by-product which can be re-cycled elsewhere in the plant, whereas traditional SO2 scrubbing methods produce wastewater streams that must be treated.

In the second system, flue gas from reactors containing high CO2, Bromine, Chlorine, HCl and HBr is treated in a multi-zone scrubber to remove contaminants before clean gas is vented. The regeneration of Bromine and Chlorine is desirable and economical however the high CO2 with alkaline reagents creates undesirable by-products which interfere with the regeneration process. Macrotek’s multi-stage process is designed to strategically remove the Bromine and Chlorine in a short retention time cross-flow section which is followed by a conventional counter-current packed section.

This type of cross flow scrubber is unique to Macrotek and allows gas with high levels of CO2 to be economically treated by significantly reducing reagent and wastewater requirements.

Engineering is currently in progress at Macrotek with project completion expected in the first quarter of 2014.

Macrotek Receives Investment from the Government of Canada to Develop New Scrubbing Technology for Industrial Gases

Markham, ON
September 12, 2013

Macrotek announced that it received an investment of $2 million from the Government of Canada through Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) for the development of a new scrubbing process for industrial gases.

Macrotek has developed a ground-breaking suite of technologies that scrub in a novel, cost-effective and efficient way. The technology is developed initially to eliminate hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is a major component of acid rain, from industrial gas streams. The technology uses a regenerative reagent, drastically reducing reagent consumption. It also converts H2S into its elemental form of sulphur, eliminating the current need to treat sulphate by-product in wastewater streams.

"Canada must nurture highly skilled individuals and new ideas that will help our businesses innovate, secure new markets and create well-paying jobs," said Minister Oliver. "By supporting advanced research and technology, our government is investing in Canadian prosperity and a cleaner environment."

"The projects announced today are great examples of the Canadian innovation and entrepreneurship that characterizes SDTC's portfolio, valued at more than $2 billion and brimming with innovative technological solutions," said Vicky Sharpe, President and CEO of SDTC. "Canadian cleantech leaders are continuing to create economic opportunities and open up avenues to new export markets."

"Thanks to support from the Government of Canada through Sustainable Development Technology Canada, Macrotek's innovative new scrubbing technique could revolutionise the industry, bringing it to a new level of environmental responsibility while achieving sound economic returns," said Peter Ristevski, Macrotek. "When the full life-cycle costs of this technology are considered, we can save Canadian companies 50% in operating costs."

The technology developed by Macrotek will also maintain or improve contaminant removal efficiency. This technology has the potential to address a multitude of other pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, simultaneously.

This funding was a part of a $14.7 million investment announced today by the Government of Canada to support four clean technology projects.

Macrotek Key Player in Supporting Canadian Industry

Toronto, Canada
December 18, 2012

Macrotek Inc., a global provider of air pollution control technologies, has an important philosophy when it comes to how it does business: keep everything in Canada. The Markham, Ontario-based company has been operating for over 80 years and makes a conscious effort in supporting its local partners. Receiving contracts from all over the world, fabrication of all Macrotek systems is subcontracted to shops in Pickering and Mississauga, Ontario. It is estimated that every hour of Macrotek engineering time results in 5-10 times the hours of subcontracted fabrication time.

In addition to its fabrication influences, Macrotek also purchases every component for its air pollution control systems from Canadian suppliers, creating even more Canadian jobs and inserting more money into Canadian industry. Components for one Macrotek project could run up to $1 million and come from all over Canada.

All of this means that over the years Macrotek has triggered thousands of hours within the Canadian manufacturing force and contributed millions of dollars to the Canadian economy.

Although Macrotek is a globally recognized pollution control provider, many of its clients are Canadian engineering or industrial companies who also appreciate doing business with their local partners. Large contracts from recent Canadian mining projects won by Macrotek would otherwise likely have gone to pollution control companies south of the border. These are often Canadian competitors who move to the United States or are bought out by larger American firms.

“Our Canadian clients often worry that we will move outside of Canada,” says Jason Hiles, Vice-President of Macrotek. “Like us, they value doing business with partners in their own backyard. It’s essential for us to be able to support them and the Canadian economy.”

Macrotek has several projects underway for the rest of 2012 and 2013, all of which will be designed and manufactured in Canada.

World leader in Precious Metal Recovery and Processing Selects Macrotek

Quebec, Ontario
July 26, 2011

A world leader in precious metal recovery and processing is building a pilot demonstration for a new proprietary technology. Part of the scope for this project includes a comprehensive gas clean-up system which will remove arsenic, acids, and particulate. Macrotek`s integrated gas clean-up system was selected. Hot gases from the furnace will be quenched and treated in an impingement tray scrubber while saturated gases are cooled to remove moisture and cleaned in a dry filter collector. For added mist removal, a fibre mesh mist eliminator will be included.  Particulate-free gases containing a large percentage of  SO2 are treated in a counter-current absorber.  This section is contaminant free-allowing for SO2 or sulphuric acid recovery.
